A visit of IAEA Director General. Yukiya Amano: I was impressed by the level of JINR research activities

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano and his accompanying persons visited JINR on 18 May 2013. Head of IAEA got acquainted with a great interest with research activities and projects of the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics and the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions.  JINR Director V.A. Matveev, JINR Vice-Directors M.G. Itkis and R. Lednický, JINR Chief Scientific Secretary N.A.Russakovich, his Deputy D.V. Kamanin, FLNP Chief Engineer A.V. Vinogradov participated in a meeting at the JINR Directorate, where possibilities of enhancement of cooperation were discussed.

Yukiya Amano spoke to journalists about his impressions of the visit:

– I was deeply impressed by the level of JINR research activities. It is very important that here fundamental research is being implemented for technical objectives. I had a great opportunity to get acquainted with your Institute today, and I will share my impressions with my colleagues in Vienna, with whom we will consider possibilities to enhance cooperation with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

– You, unfortunately, have not visited FLNP. Is there a possibility of a formal recognition of JINR as the IAEA Member in the area of application of neutron beams?
– It’s difficult for me to give a definite answer now, but we are going to discuss such a variant of cooperation.

V.A. Matveev commented on the visit of the IAEA Director to JINR:

– First of all I’d like to note that IAEA took the initiative to visit JINR, and it is very pleasant for us. IAEA is a very prestigious organization and it is interested in large scientific centers, which hold fundamental research that has prospective application in the fields of application of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The interest showed by the Agency, means for us a opportunity to enhance cooperation with IAEA and consolidate position of JINR in Europe and in the world. Yesterday, by the way, we received a delegation from the European Commission. It is all very important at the time, when JINR strives for support of the Russian Government for the mega-science project NICA.

We have long-standing history of cooperation with IAEA: we cooperate in training of young specialists, organization of expert services. We exchange exceptionally important and useful experience. Today's meeting is a further step in enhancing of cooperation with the Agency. We realize now how we should develop our relations and attract young specialists, who want to work in the scientific center, where internationally recognized advanced research is being held.
